GIS Manager - Profile and Role

Role

The GIS manager will typically be approached by the Sustainability Champion to participate in this project. The GIS manager’s role is to prepare all relevant spatial files to create the building geometries for the baseline UBEM using UBEM.IO and provide the data over to the energy modeler.

The GIS manager may be a municipal employee or otherwise familiar with data sets of the local building stock such as shapefiles (or .geojson/.gpkg), tax assessor data, etc. The GIS manager has to ensure that this data set is “clean.” A clean dataset means that all the footprints are valid, have no defects such as extraneous corners, that all required fields are included for each building of interest, and that any accessory structures (such as garages, sheds, etc.) are either not included or put in a separate “shading” category. One of the biggest challenges the GIS manager may need to overcome is matching data typically found in a tax assessor file (building age and use type) with the building footprint file, as several structures may be on the same tax parcel.
